5 Habits Hurting Your Future

Twenty years from now, what type of life will you be living?

If you’re not sure how to answer that question, you might need to take a minute and think about how your life is going right now.

Do you have any habits that might be wrecking your financial future?

1. Not Planning Ahead

You have stuff you want to do. You have dreams for you and your family. You have dreams for your kids. But how are you going to get there?

Your emergency fund is designed to protect you when life happens. That’s why we want you to have three to six months of expenses saved up for those rainy days. Also, investing for retirement and your kids’ college will be a huge part of your future success.

Plan ahead now so you’re not filled with anxiety when the kids go to college and retirement comes around.

2. Not Assigning Every Dollar a Name

That’s just a fancy way of saying you’re living without a budget.

If you want to win with money, you must sit down and create a zero-based budget every single month!

3. Being Unmotivated

Some people might call it uninspired. Others might say it’s just being plain lazy. Whatever you call it, being unmotivated is a sure way to wreck your future.

Make a plan (see point 1) about where you see yourself in ten years, then do everything in your power to make that plan happen. Fight a lack of motivation by always moving and working toward something.

4. Working a J-O-B

If you’re not passionate about what you do every day, that should be a big red flag. You spend too much time working to waste it on something you don’t enjoy.

Twenty years from now, will you look back and say you just earned a paycheck or that you made a difference in the lives of others? Get plugged into something you are passionate about!

5. Not Giving Generously

Whether you’re giving money or time, the act of giving changes you. It changes your spirit and causes you to see life differently. Make giving the first thing you do as part of your budget. Find an organization, charity or special cause you care about and make it a focus in your budget and schedule.
