Building a Great Culture Starts With You

Whether you like it or not, your company has a culture. In fact, even as you’re reading this article, it’s directly impacting your business.

How is that possible? Culture is how your receptionist is answering the phone, customer care is solving a complaint, a new leader is dealing with team conflict, and your sales team is connecting with your customers. It’s the collective behavior of your team. Specifically, it’s how they act and react to each other, your vendors and your customers. These behaviors are being reinforced each day by decisions made, problems solved, and ideas communicated.

If you think you can control your culture from the top down, think again. It’s not possible. But what you can control is how you choose to lead. It has to be in a manner that creates an environment that will grow the culture you desire.

Here are three ways to lead that will create the kind of culture that helps companies succeed.

1. Take Care of Your Team

One way to grow a great culture is by training your leaders to listen well and care deeply about what’s happening in the lives of the people they lead. As your company grows, it’s inevitable that personal or family emergencies will pop up over time. Building a caring culture means a willingness to go above and beyond in the hard times with help like providing meals or rides until life gets back to normal.

2. Recognize a Job Well Done

Almost nothing strengthens your team’s morale as much as paying them a compliment for good work. Whether it’s a simple pat on the back when you see them following through well or calling them out for praise in front of others, we all love it when our leaders acknowledge our achievements.

3. Provide Open and Honest Communication

This one is foundational to any healthy company’s culture. Without it, your team will be held back by distrust and fear. But when you lead with a policy of transparent communication about what’s going on in your company, you grow trust and confidence in where things are headed.

Lead your culture from the team level by making sure decision making, problem solving and communication are consistent with your vision and core values. It’s the only way to win.
